Wool beds that still work when damp.

A lot of the animals we hear about sleep in houses that were cut into apartments. One room runs hot. The wall with the window does not. Foam in that spot goes clammy and stays clammy. Washed wool still insulates after it takes on a little damp from a sill, a coat, or a dog that walked the inlet.

How a bed is built

Fill

Washed wool batting, about 3 inches of loft when new. No foam slab inside.

Edge

Boxed, so the loft stays in the middle instead of migrating to one corner.

Cover

Cotton ticking, closed with cotton tapes. No zipper for hair to pack into.

Base

A grippy cloth sewn on, so the bed does not skate across a wood floor.

The small bed is for a cat, or for a terrier that sleeps in a circle. The medium is the one most dogs that fold themselves will use. The long bed is for a dog that sleeps on its side with the legs out. If the dog already ignores a bed and sleeps on the bare board by the window, a larger size will not fix the habit. Put the bed where the animal already settles after dark, and move it three feet at most.

Where it fails

Wool fails if you soak the batting, if you dry it on a radiator, or if you store it wet in a sealed bin in a cellar. Ithaca cellars in July will give that wool a smell you will not wash out. A cover fails when the tapes are cut off and the bed is used bare until the batting pills into clumps. We can sell you another cover. We cannot fluff a batting that has been washed in a machine.

Dried clay brushes off the cover. Wet clay smears in. Knock mud off outside, before the dog gets on the bed. The full rinse is on the lake mud page, and the apartment version is the radiator and sill note.

Care

• Shake the bed out. Air it. Do not lay it on a radiator or a baseboard.
• Spot-clean the cover. If you wash the cover, use cold water and dry it flat.
• Do not machine-wash the batting, and do not take it to a cleaner that steams it.
• In warm months, pull the batting out and store it dry, off the floor, with air around it.

We do not sell heated pads. A chewed cord under a radiator is not a problem we will hand you. If the apartment is too cold for a wool bed, that is heat to take up with the landlord.
